There was something I found beautiful about this sockeye salmon and the way it has come to rest along the banks of the Skeena River. It's placement is a little symbolic, the tail in the water, the body on land, how it ties them together. Although this salmon has not been eaten by a bear or eagle, it is still vitally important. Small invertebrates will eat some of it, which may be eaten by upcoming salmon fry. As it decomposes it releases nutrients, some of which comes from the ocean into the river where it is absorbed by the trees and plants which grow to provide shade and hiding places for future generations. There are many ways in which salmon are important to our land and ecosystem. They are truly amazing creatures both in life and beyond.
